I finally got a good opportunity to photograph the male bronzed cowbird in full display for the females. This was taken last Saturday when we joined the Travis Audubon Society’s San Saba County “Big Day” Trip, led by Jean Martin. It was an exhausting and adventurous day. Hubby and I woke up at 4 a.m. after getting about 3.5 hours sleep (since I had the night shift) and didn’t arrive home until 10 p.m. last night. I didn’t regret the lack of sleep or my sore muscles because I got good photo ops, enjoyed hiking in a privately owned black-capped vireo sanctuary, met a fantastic group of people and soaked in lots of gorgeous scenery especially this view from Jimma’s beautiful ranch home during lunch yesterday. (Special thanks to Jean, Jimma, Christine and Russ for sharing their time, place and transportation.)

Now, back to the male bronzed cowbird. It’s blackish overall with bronze iridescence on back and rump. It can display its neck feathers in an upright position like a ruff  ; has black bill and legs with red eyes in breeding season, brownish orange in non-breeding season.

    • Love to watch these beauties strutting around….and if the female is anywhere near, how the girls are so nonchalant about the ‘display’. Wonderful…love the red eyes, don’t you?

Thanks for linking up at the Bird D’Pot this weekend.

Thanks for coming by today and for your kind words. I will visit you as soon as I can. Have a fantastic day and don't forget to smile. ~ Shey
